Streetlights repaired in Kensington

19 June 2025

The City’s Energy teams were on the ground and attended to faulty streetlights and infrastructure in Kensington. Streetlight maintenance is a daily priority across the metro and in May alone, more than 10 000 faulty streetlights were repaired. This intensified effort aims to enhance safety and visibility for residents during the colder and darker winter months.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, joined Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis in Kensington for the Mayoral Blitz in the area.

‘Our streetlight maintenance and infrastructure upgrade work occurs on a daily basis and this work is part of our commitment to building safer communities. We are also working hard to improve on our turnaround times for reported faults.

‘We are working proactively to stay ahead of the rising number of service requests across the city, driven by the winter weather conditions. Our commitment to quick turnaround times is also reflected in the daily infrastructure updates we share on the City’s official social media platforms.

‘The City manages more than 245 000 streetlights across the metro. However, challenges such as vandalism, theft and illegal connections often result in damaged infrastructure. In addition, wet and windy weather can temporarily slow down electrical work and repairs due to safety concerns. We ask communities to continue reporting streetlight faults to us and we thank residents for their support and continued vigilance,’ said Alderman Limberg.
